I Used to Draw

But not all that much

I don’t think there was ever any doubt that my life was going to have something to do with art. But I also tell people that I never really liked drawing. I preferred Legos and building bow-and-arrow bows out of stink weed (I couldn’t smell it and didn’t think about the name). But I did in fact, on occasion, put pen or pencil to paper and make some art. Sometimes I still do. But not that much, really.

Here's a doodle I made

Blips - 20 minute drawings

I rather enjoy the doodle. I find it relaxing and almost like a form of improve. For the series below, I gave no thought whatsoever about what I was making. I started with one weird squiggle and drew free-form repetative shapes until I was done. Made during staff meetings while I worked at VCU (just after graduating college), each of these drawings took about 20 minutes. I call them Blips.

The crossover into digital

While drawing is nice, it wasn’t very long before my art gravitated toward the computer. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of 3D Studio Max in 2001. It was love at first viewport. It would be a long time before I knew what I was doing, but I stuck with it.

No 3D software on this bad boy

Before I had access to real 3D software, I had to get creative. For this image I used a combination of Corel Draw and Microsoft Paint – moving between them by taking a screenshots of Corel and pasting them into Paint – to make this image. It was all hand-drawn perspective with no reference. I made it for a school project where the neighboring groups drew maps with pencil lines on paper. I did not need to make this.

I make much better art now (at least, I think so)
